Online slots are surrounded by a lot of half-truths and myths. Some sites claim that there are "hot" and "cold" slots, winning patterns or strategies to guarantee a profit. This isn't true β and it's not just our opinion, it's a mathematical fact verified by independent labs on every licensed slot machine. This article explains how the technology actually works.
How a random number generator (RNG) works
RNG (Random Number Generator β random number generator) is software that controls the results of each spin on an online slot machine. More specifically: online casinos use a type called PRNG (Pseudo-Random Number Generator β pseudo-random generator), which is not a flaw β it's a standard, auditable and mathematically verifiable approach.
How PRNG works in a nutshell:
- Algorithm + seed. A PRNG works with a mathematical algorithm (eg Mersenne Twister or similar) and an input value called a "seed". The seed changes in real time based on timestamp, server activity or other unpredictable inputs.
- Continuous generation. The software generates thousands of numbers per second β continuously, even when no one is playing. The result of the spin depends on which number is active in the split second you press the button.
- Mapping to symbols. The generated number is converted to the position of the symbols on the reels according to the game's pay table. This procedure is precisely defined in the game engine and verified by the certification laboratory.
- Zero memory. Each spin starts from scratch β the PRNG doesn't know what came before. Previous wins or losses have no effect on the following result.
Why not "truly random" (TRNG)? A True Random Number Generator (TRNG) would require a physical source of entropy (e.g. Radioactive decay or atmospheric noise). PRNG is preferred by the gaming industry because it is fully auditable β a lab can repeat the same seed and algorithm and verify the results. TRNG cannot be audited in this way. Auditability is therefore a security advantage, not a weakness.
β Why there are no winning patterns on slot machines
Claiming that there are "winning patterns", "hot" slots or predictable payout cycles is based on a misunderstanding of how PRNGs work. Here are the specific reasons:
β Myth: "The machine is 'charged' after a long losing streak and will soon pay off."
β Reality: RNG does not have a "charged" state. Each spin is independent. A streak of 200 losing spins does not increase the chance of winning on the 201st spin by a single point. This mistaken intuition is called the gambler's fallacy and psychologically contributes to losing larger amounts than the gambler planned.
β Myth: "If you play at the right time, you have a higher chance."
β Reality: The result depends on a fraction of a second of pressing the button β the number in the PRNG changes thousands of times per second. It is not possible to time the spin to point towards the winning value. The time of day, day of the week, or how many other players are currently playing have no effect on the outcome.
β Myth: "The casino sets the machine so that it doesn't pay out for a long time after a big jackpot win."
β Reality: With a certified slot with an audited RNG, this is technically impossible without violating the certificate. The Jackpot spin and the spin following it are as independent as any other two spins. Manipulation of the RNG would mean the withdrawal of the certificate and the loss of permission from the gambling regulator.
RTP (theoretical return) only shows up over millions of spins β not over a single play session. Your particular session may end up well above or below the RTP. This is part of the mathematics of gambling, not proof of manipulation.

The resulting certificate is valid for a specific version of the game software. If the provider releases an update to the game, the certification must take place again. How to verify the certificate of a specific machine or casino
Verification is straightforward β just know where to look:
- Game rules (pay table). Open the game's payout system (usually the "i" or "?" icon right in the slot interface). Look for the lab's logo and certificate number in the rules or on the last slide.
- Casino footer. Certified casinos display laboratory logos (eCOGRA seal, iTech Labs logo, GLI badge) in the footer of the page. The logo should be clickable and link to the lab's verification page β that's proof of validity, not just decoration.
- Laboratory verification page. ECOGRA, iTech Labs and GLI have their own online databases of certified casinos and games. Look for the name of the casino or provider directly on the laboratory page.

Other widespread myths about online slots
β "The demo version is set more generously to entice players."
β Reality: With serious providers, the demo and the sharp version run on the same engine and RNG. But a number of slots offer several certified RTP variants (for example 96%, 94% or 92%) and the operator chooses which one to deploy. The difference in impression therefore does not mean a "more generous demo", but may mean a different set RTP variant β you can check the information in the game's info panel in both modes.
β "The casino can remotely switch the machine to 'cold' mode."
β Reality: The certificate is issued for a specific version of the software. Remote switching of the game parameters would mean changing the game software β and therefore the certificate would expire. For a licensed operator, this leads directly to a violation of the conditions of the gambling regulator's permit.
β "The new slot pays more because the casino wants to attract players."
β Reality: RTP is fixed by the game engine and auditing β not by the casino's marketing decision. The casino cannot increase the RTP without changing the game code and a new certification. The perceived variation shortly after the game is launched is an effect of a small sample of spins, not a change in RTP.
